Named for a Siouan tribe whose appellation means “people upstream,” Omaha sits on rolling bluffs overlooking the Missouri River not quite 200mi north of Kansas City. The city was founded in 1854; in 1863, it was chosen as the eastern terminus of the transcontinental railroad. Cobblestone lanes and 1880s warehouses survive from an era when tons of cargo were loaded onto westbound trains from Missouri River steamboats; this district, the Old Market, later became Omaha’s wholesale produce district before its Victorian buildings were restores as galleries, boutiques and cafes. Horse-drawn carriages still py the streets giving a taste of past glory.
