In its heyday, 64 trains and 10,000 people a day passed through this Art Deco-style Union Pacific Railroad station. Now restored, the Durham Western features a waiting room with gold- and silver-leaf trim, 13ft chandeliers and a classic working soda fountain. A stationary five-car train, complete with steam engine, Pullman car, lounge car and caboose, welcomes passengers. Recorded conversations accompany castings of sailors, lovers and other passengers from the 1930s, 40s and 50s, inviting passersby to eavesdrop. Downstairs galleries focus on the historical evolution of Omaha, with re-created townscapes, photographs and memorabilia.
