Opened in 1981, a small marine lab and teaching facility for Peninsula College contains open tanks filled with local marine life (including an octopus); a touch tank where visitors can stroke starfish, sea anemones and sea cucumbers; and a new jellyfish exhibit. Two exterior walls of the building are covered with murals completed in 1998 by Port Townsend artist Corey Ench. The paintings, highly detailed but considerably idealized, depict nearby Hollywood Beach in the 17C, when it was used by Native Americans, and in the late 1800s with settlers.
