State-of-the-art multimedia techniques relate the 2.5-million-year history of the Black Hills region. This expansive building incorporates the collections of five separate museums-the Museum of Geology of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology; the Archaeological Research Center of the State Historical Society; the Sioux Indian Museum of the US Department of the Interior; the Duhamel Plains Indian Collection, and the Minnilusa Pioneer Museum. Visitors watch a 14min orientation film in a 150-seat theater, then continue through the exhibit area on self-guided audio tours with Lakota or American narrators. Provocative displays offer insight into the minds of Indian warriors and the secrets of the Sioux's sacred Black Hills. A resident archaeologist answers questions about prehistoric digs. A hologramic Lakota storyteller, illuminated story walls and ambient sounds enhance exhibits.
