: Michelin's recommendations
Built in 1897, this elegant residence was purchased in 1905 by Kimberly-Clark Corp. founder J. Alfred Kimberly, who moved here with his family to spend his retirement years. The luxurious interior, renovated between 1905 and 1910 by Mrs. Kimberly, offers an excellent look at early-20C decorative elements, including rich woodwork, elegant wall coverings (rose damask, painted silver glaze), stained-glass windows and Tiffany lamps; the furnishings are original to the house. Upon the deaths of Alfred and his wife, ownership passed to their daughter, Mary Shirk, who promised to will the six-acre estate to the people of Redlands on the condition that the community raise funds to purchase the adjacent property (today known as Prospect Park) and preserve it from development. The house crowns a gentle hill landscaped in the Italian Renaissance style, with cascading fountains, stairways, balustrades and terraced gardens replete with more than 53 species of plants.
