Governor's Mansion State Historic Park : Michelin's recommendations
This landmark Second Empire Italianate pile was built in 1877 for Sacramento hardware tycoon Albert Gallatin and was acquired by the state in 1903 as the official residence for the state's chief executive. It has more than 30 rooms and nine bathrooms, 14-foot ceilings, Italian marble fireplaces, chandeliers and French mirrors, as well as a motley assemblage of furnishings and artifacts-including First Ladies' gowns-left by the families of the 13 governors who set up household here. The last governor to inhabit the mansion was Ronald Reagan in the 1960s. His successor, Jerry Brown, preferred an apartment across from the Capitol, and subsequent governors took up lodgings in a modern house elsewhere in Sacramento. Gov. Schwarzenegger rented a suite at the Hyatt for his entire first year in office in 2004, at a cost of $55,000.
