Timken Museum of Art Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Sleekly clad in Italian travertine marble, the compact, single-story museum (1965, Frank Hope) displays in its six galleries and rotunda the Putnam Foundation Collection, a trove of art spanning 600 years, as well as high-qualty traveling exhibitions. The Putnam sisters' passion for European Masters is evident in such works as Portrait of a Man (1634) by Frans Hals, Portrait of a Young Captain (c.1625) by Rubens and Rembrandt's Saint Bartholomew (1657). Highlights of the outstanding holdings in American Paintings include Cho-looke, The Yosemite Fall (1864) by Albert Bierstadt and Mrs. Thomas Gage (1771) by John Singleton Copley. Amy Putnam's private collection of Russian icons dating from the 14C to the 19C is displayed in a separate room on walls covered in velvet that was custom-woven in Florence for the museum.
