Downtown's stateliest hotel, this massive 11-story Italian Renaissance Revival structure (1910) faces Horton Plaza. In 1895 Fannie Grant, daughter-in-law of 18th US President Ulysses S. Grant, bought the Horton House Hotel that had occupied the site since 1870. The new hotel she and her husband built in its place, named to honor the former president, was considered one of the grandest of its day. Restored in the early 1980s and again in the early 2000s, when it was purchased by Starwood Resorts & Hotels, its interior boasts such lavish decorations as 107 chandeliers; 150 tons of marble in more than two dozen colors; and eight kinds of wood, including Carpathian elm burl, mahogany, bird's-eye maple and American black walnut.
