William Heath Davis House : Michelin's recommendations
The Gaslamp District's oldest surviving structure, a two-story saltbox built from a Sears catalog on the East Coast in 1850 and shipped around Cape Horn, is named San Franciscan William Heath Davis, a San Francisco financier who tried, yet failed, to develop the area in the 1850s. Fellow San Franciscan Alonzo Horton succeeded in 1867 after building a commercial wharf at the end of 5th Avenue. The house is an exact duplicate of one lived in briefly by Davis and later by Horton. The dwelling also served as a hospital and as an officers' barracks. Rooms on both floors are decorated in period style; a Gaslamp Quarter visitor center operates on the main floor.
