Named for the legendary Henry Comstock and his Lode-the precious metal discovery that sparked the 19th century Gold Rush-this 1907 saloon is a historically correct homage to Americana with its tin ceilings, antiques, old-time portraits, and carved wood bar reflecting the dawn of the Barbary Coast. Enjoy a classic Sazerac or Manhattan and declare yourself Emperor, as Joshua Norton did, but don't call the town "Frisco." Comstock is a bar mainly but, in the SF foodie tradition, also serves quite good pub grub. Soak up such thrilling items as red pepper jelly and cream cheese on cheddar crackers; crispy pork and homemade biscuits; or beef shank and bone marrow pot pie. The mezzanine above the bar is reserved for live piano and jazz artists in the evening.
