Shaded by the 100-foot-tall Peace Pagoda, Japantown seems the obvious go-to for authentic Japanese cuisine. But, amid the quirky magazine shops, hardware and garden stores, where to eat isn't immediately obvious. Walk a few blocks, and tucked in the corner of a building, find Kiss. Like its noodle shop neighbors, Kiss doesn't make much of a first impression: the mom-and-pop shop has little décor and even less seating. A keen foodie though will notice that there's not a vacant seat in the house. Book in advance and make like the regulars who order the daily omakase, a multi-course feast of traditional dishes like smoky sardine salad; fresh nigiri; and chawan mushi s tudded with halibut and gingko nuts. You will never again wonder where to eat in Japantown.
