Cuisine Italian

More than $75

Notably welcoming and warm, Quince is upscale yet conveys a distinct northern Californian personality. The airy and attractive room features brick walls and elegant everything, yet nothing is stuffy or heavy. There are no poseurs or loud crowds. Everyone is just happy to be here and celebrating a special occasion, business deal, or vacation. This sounds simple, but Quince has attained an easy grace that other restaurants don't realize they lack. The menu favors a more contemporary Italian cuisine, which is creative and delicious. The nightly prix-fixe may begin with a slow-cooked farm egg in a complex vegetable broth with seasonal accents like pristine micro turnips, shaved asparagus, and bits of paper-thin bacon. This might be followed by perfectly cooked pasta like casoncelli with roasted, shaved, and blanched asparagus in brown butter; or house-made strichetti in a powerfully reduced squab sauce with shredded loin, truffles, and Parmigiano Reggiano. Finish with an ambitious and modern sweet, like a rectangular millefoglie layering chocolate cake and mousse with pistachios, alongside a scoop of intense pistachio ice cream with lemon confit, crumbled honeycomb, and toasted nuts.

Some dishes are consistent with l'etoile, especially the pasta second courses, which were wonderful. Some dishes are merely very good, particularly the meat main courses. The wine list is extensive, and the (famous) sommelier is very knowledgeable. While there are many pricy bottles, there are also some excellent values in the lower price range. The service is correct: attentive and cordial without being at all instrusive. The atmosphere is pleasant. Somewhat formal, but not stuffy. A pleasant buzz in the rooms, but no difficulty carrying on normal conversation at the table. We took our son there for a major birthday, and in a charming touch the menus of the day for us had "Happy Birthday, [son]" printed across the top. That brought a happy smile to his face. A good place for a special occasion.

The menu is expensive, and you are limited to either a four course prix fixe, or an eight course tasting menu. There were a couple of pricing oddities, to our way of thinking. For example, a selection of cheeses required a price supplement, which I don't think I have ever seen on a French prix fixe menu. And a risotto dish carried a price supplement. I would expect a price supplement only for very expensive ingredients, such as foie gras or truffles. While the room is pleasant enough, the decor and fittings are not at all distinctive. As my son remarked, 'it looks sort of like a hotel lobby.' That's what can happen when you go for an all black and gray color scheme.
