The city's largest building, this 52-story, dark-red behemoth (1971, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) competes with the Transamerica Pyramid for dominance of the skyline. The building contains 2 million square feet of office space. Its distinctive color comes from thick slabs of carnelian granite that wrap the faceted central shaft rising 780ft from street level. A grand, panoramic view extends from the top-floor Carnelian Room lounge and restaurant (take express elevator from Concourse Level; open to the public after 3pm; 415-433-7500); changing exhibits grace the Concourse Gallery and the main lobby, one floor above. The broad, open plaza along California Street is anchored by Transcendence (1969, Masayuki Nagare), a dark, polished sculpture popularly dubbed "The Banker's Heart.
