The state's official historical research organization, founded in the late 19C, carries out an active program of collection and exhibition on California's colorful, rambunctious past. In its attractive building (1922), the society maintains a library (Wed-Fri noon-4:30pm) of books, manuscripts, original documents, journals, maps, photographs and fine and decorative arts covering the great sweep of California's history, with some publications dating from the 17C. A spacious public gallery on the first level houses changing thematic exhibits curated by society staff, as well as traveling exhibits organized by other historical institutions. There also is an excellent specialty bookshop off the lobby.
