This brightly attractive and very accessible temple honors the Queen of Heaven, using her title as known in China's coastal Fujian and Guangdong provinces and Taiwan. The central statue is guarded by figures of two ferocious warriors-the blue-faced Shun Feng Er ("Ear of Favorable Wind") on the left and the red-faced Chien Li Yen ("Eye of 1,000 Li") on the right-noted respectively for their prodigious powers of hearing and sight. (A li is a unit of distance; hence the guards can detect evil from 1,000 li.). Giant puppets of the pair can be seen striding the streets, arms swinging widely and rhythmically, in the annual Chinese New Year Parade.
