Standing at the symbolic entry to the Wall Street of the West, this grand banking hall rose in the aftermath of the 1906 quake as the headquarters of First National Bank (later merged with Crocker Bank). The original section along Post Street, once a 14-story office tower, was designed by Willis Polk; above that entrance an ornate cast-iron canopy is graced with figures that flank a shield, inscribed with the words Systematic Saving is the Key to Success. The ornate interior banking hall, now a Wells Fargo branch bank replete with coffered ceiling and stately columns, was completed by Charles Gottschalk in 1921. The building was shortened in the 1980s and incorporated into the adjacent Crocker Galleria, an elegant shopping center that cuts through the middle of the block, its three tiers of commercial spaces topped by a barrel-vaulted glass roof.The mall's pleasant cafes and deluxe boutiques such as Gianni Versace and Polo Ralph Lauren welcome tourists and workers from adjacent office towers. From the upper level of the Galleria, a stairway leads to a tranquil rooftop terrace atop One Montgomery, a good place to enjoy a takeout lunch.
