SS Jeremiah O'Brien
SS Jeremiah O'Brien
: Michelin's recommendations
This noble gray vessel formed part of the 5,000-ship armada that stormed Normandy Beach on D-Day in 1944. Launched on June 19, 1943, she was one of a fleet of 2,751 Liberty Ships that served as the backbone of the supply line to US armed forces in Europe and the Pacific during World War II. Lovingly restored and maintained by a crew of volunteers, the ship remains unaltered and fully operational. Self-guided tours cover all areas of the vessel, including the wheelhouse, engine room, crew's quarters, deckside guns and ship's store. On "steaming weekends" (3rd weekend Jan-Apr, Jun-Sept & Nov), the crew fires up her triple-expansion steam engines, used in the blockbuster movie Titanic to replicate the engines of that ill-fated luxury liner. The O'Brien also welcomes visitors on all-day cruises of San Francisco Bay several times a year.
