Built in Gothic Revival style with Italianate details, this handsome, twin-spired church (1924) fronting Washington Square is fondly known as the Italian Cathedral. Lawrence Ferlinghetti dubbed it the marzipan church on the plaza, a description particularly true at night when floodlights bathe its cream-colored exterior. The imposing facade bears the opening line of Dante's Paradiso: The glory of Him who moves all things penetrates and glows throughout the universe. The interior is warm and inviting, enclosed by an unusual flat ceiling of dark wood and illuminated by banks of votive candles and richly colored stained-glass windows. A spectacular, 40ft-high altar, made of Mediterranean marble and onyx, features a sculpted reproduction of da Vinci's Last Supper.Screen legend Marilyn Monroe and baseball great Joe DiMaggio took wedding photos on the front steps of SS. Peter and Paul, contributing to the myth that they were married inside. (Both were in fact married in the church, though not to each other.) DiMaggio grew up in North Beach and as a youth in the 1930s was a member of the church's boys' club along with New York Yankees teammates Tony Lazzeri and Frankie Crossetti.The church reflects North Beach's multiethnic character, offering Mass in English, Italian and Cantonese.
