San Francisco Art Institute Interesting : Michelin's recommendations

Founded in 1871, this prestigious fine-arts college occupies a Spanish Colonial Revival-style building (1926, Arthur Brown, Jr.), expanded in the béton brut style by English-born architect Paffard Keatinge Clay in 1969. A cultural center as well as a college, the institute welcomes the public to exhibits, galleries and avant-garde film screenings. Displays of student work change regularly in its open-air courtyard; temporary exhibits are mounted in the Walter and McBean galleries. The chapel-like Diego Rivera Gallery features "The Making of a Fresco Showing the Building of a City" (1931), a two-story mural by the famed Mexican artist. Rivera himself appears in the work, along with his wife, Frida Kahlo. From the rooftop deck, grand views extend over Telegraph Hill and the northern waterfront.
