This converted firehouse garage houses a wonderful collection of historic fire engines, including the city's first hand-drawn pump cart (1849). Historical displays, photos and memorabilia, including eclectic collections of fire extinguishers, helmets, hydrants and uniforms, tell of the city's several devastating fires-including the conflagration of 1906-and of heroic figures from San Francisco's firefighting past.Particularly worth noting is the helmet that belonged to Lillie Hitchcock Coit, the eccentric booster of the San Francisco Fire Department; an ornate certificate proclaims her an honorary member of Knickerbocker Engine Co. No. 5. Visitors may also inspect the modern-day fire engines and equipment in adjacent Firehouse no. 10.
