Anchoring the west end of Jefferson Street, this airy shopping complex belies its industrial origins. Constructed in 1907 as a packing plant for the California Fruit Canners Association, the building housed the most productive peach-canning operation in the world from 1916 to 1937. Rough economic times during the Great Depression forced the owner, Del Monte, to close the plant. The building was used mainly as a warehouse until a developer bought it in 1963 and renovated it. Four external brick walls are all that remain of the original structure. The interior, completed in 1967, reveals a seamless modern design of open stairwells, bridges, spacious courtyards and meandering passageways lined with 30 boutiques, restaurants and gourmet shops. On sunny days, the courtyard on the west side is a pleasant spot to relax with a cold drink and listen to street musicians.
