The Presidio Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

For more than two centuries, the Presidio's privileged setting on 1,480 acres overlooking the Golden Gate earned it a reputation as the most beautiful military installation in North America. Residents and visitors are drawn to the lushly forested expanse to enjoy its traces of San Francisco's military history, its recreational opportunities and the spectacular views extending from its miles of wooded trails. Closed as an army base in 1994, the Presidio is now administered by a federal trust agency in partnership with the National Park Service. The Presidio offers ample free parking, with lots sprinkled around the property; follow signs. If you're driving or bicycling, you may enter the Presidio by one of its four historic gates, or by Lincoln Boulevard from the southwest; the latter skirts the Coastal Defense Batteries, offering stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The Lombard Gate (Lombard St. at Lyon St.) is convenient to the Marina District and the Palace of Fine Arts. Start your visit at the Presidio Visitor Center, housed in the Presidio Officers' Club at the Main Post, still the focal point of the Presidio. The stately brick barracks (c.1890) stretching along Montgomery Street once housed soldiers of the Spanish-American War. Other sights not to miss are the pet cemetery, the chapel, and Crissy Field, a celebrated environmental project that restored 200 acres of tidal marsh to an area used for years as an air strip.
