This 1,480-acre former military reservation is now part of the Golden Gate Recreation Area. Establish in 1776, it remained an army base through most of the US eras, through an angry shot was never fired. A brick barracks on the historic Main Post has been converted to a Visitor Center (Montgomery St.). A bastion built in 1861 to guard the Golden Gate from Confederate attack during the Civil War, Fort Point National Historic Site sits beneath the Golden Gate Bridge.
