These two high points dominate the horizon west of downtown and are visible from more areas of the city than Mt. Davidson, highest point in San Francisco at 929ft. The two distinct but adjacent peaks reach 904ft (north peak) and 922ft (south peak). Most visitors content themselves with the grand panorama of the north and east sides of the city from the parking lot at Christmas Tree Point, although it is possible to climb up the grassy slopes of either peak for a view to the west as well. On clear days, Mt. Diablo to the east in Contra Costa County, and Mt. Tamalpais, to the north in Marin County, come into view.Architect Bernard Maybeck, who designed the Palace of Fine Arts for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition, had grandiose plans for Twin Peaks, including a great monument at the summit with waterfalls cascading to the valley below. The plans never materialized. Today visitors and locals throng the viewpoint, particularly on weekend afternoons.
