A World War II, Balao-class submarine built in the Portsmouth naval shipyard in 1943, this deep-diving, 311ft vessel made a half-dozen patrols during her two years of service in the Pacific, sinking six Japanese ships and damaging four others. The haunting, self-guided audio tour begins on the upper deck and moves from the rear (aft) torpedo room through the maneuvering room, engine rooms, galley, control room and officers' quarters to the cramped forward torpedo room, where members of the crew slept beside the massive weapons. A former commander of the sub narrates the audio tour, his matter-of-fact voice and understated descriptions effectively conveying the claustrophobia, fear and boredom that faced those who signed on for submarine duty. Pampanito veterans have added their personal accounts, complemented by sound effects and other historic recordings.
