Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum : Michelin's recommendations
Modeled after the Temple of Amon at Karnak, the museum features one of the most extensive displays of Egyptian and Mesopotamian artifacts on the West Coast, numbering some 5,000 pieces. Note in particular the display on mummification (gallery A), with painted coffins; sarcophagi; human and animal remains, including an unsheathed, mummified body; and a full-scale reproduction of a Middle Kingdom Rock Tomb (visited by guided tour only).Displays of Egyptian pottery, jewelry, glass, funerary objects, writing implements and statues of deities (galleries B, C & D) range from the pre-Dynastic period (4800 BC) to the Coptic period (late 2C-mid-7C AD) and include Babylonian, Sumerian and Assyrian cylinder seals and cuneiform tablets. The museum is located on the edge of Rosicrucian Park, a five-acre city block filled with statues, gardens and Egyptian- and Moorish-style buildings that serve as headquarters for the English Grand Lodge of the nonsectarian Rosicrucian Order, AMORC (Ancient and Mystical Order Rosae Crucis). Rosicrucian Park was established in 1927, when the order's imperator, H. Spencer Lewis, established its headquarters in San Jose. The grounds now house research and administrative buildings, an auditorium, a planetarium and the museum.
