This strange, rambling 160-room Victorian hodgepodge is the creation of Sarah Winchester, widow of rifle magnate William Wirt Winchester. After purchasing an eight-room San Jose farmhouse in 1884, she added to it compulsively until her death in 1922. Local legend avers that Mrs. Winchester was guided in her architectural excesses by the ghosts of those who had lost their lives to Winchester firearms. Now largely unfurnished, the house is notable for its collection of Tiffany and European art glass. The Historic Firearms Museum on the grounds displays an international collection of pistols and rifles.
