Shining star of Santa Barbara's architectural renaissance, the L-shaped Moorish courthouse (1929) surrounds a verdant sunken courtyard and garden. Above the cornice of the facade's Anacapa Arch is chiseled the city's motto: "God gave us the country. The skill of man hath built the town." Arched doorways, open-air galleries and graceful curving staircases distinguish the interior of the steel-frame building. Intricate Tunisian tile mosaics and metal work abound; even elements such as telephone booths are cached in carved wood frames. The Board of Supervisors' Assembly Room (2nd floor) features murals by artist Dan Sayre Groesbeck illustrating the area's history. From the observation deck atop the 85ft clock tower extends an excellent panoramaaa of the city.
