The Plaza
: Michelin's recommendations
Faced on its north by the Palace of the Governors, this National Historic Landmark was the original city center of Santa Fe, the focus of a Pueblo Indian revolt in 1680 and of the recapture of the city by the Spanish in 1692-93. Later, it was the end of the Santa Fe Trail for 19C American travelers heading west. Strict laws today protect historic adobe and Territorial-style architecture; these buildings are home to shops, galleries, restaurants and hotels. All downtown structures must abide by a building code that limits their choice of color to "42 shades of brown." Many of Santa Fe's finest shops are located on or near The Plaza; it is hard to top Packards for authentic Native American crafts or Montez for traditional Spanish colonial art.
