See a "powerful" attraction in Washington state: Mount St. Helens! Learn how the ecosystem has been recovering since the 1980 volcanic eruption by listening to your naturalist guide and reading eyewitness accounts from eruption survivors.
Mount St. Helens erupted in May 1980. The eruption lasted nine hours, devastated 230 square miles of forest, and turned day sky into night as a plume of ash fell over Washington state and beyond. This all-day tour of Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument is led by a naturalist guide who educates on how well the ecosystem has been recovering since then. Hike into the blast zone, just five miles from the crater, before entering the Johnston Ridge Observatory to read eyewitness accounts from eruption survivors. Throughout the day, your guide will share stories about how what happened at Mt. St. Helens started a new era in how active volcanoes are monitored and forecasted. Additional activities include walking on eruption and hummocks trails for an up-close and personal look at the restored ecosystem.
