Positioned at the northern end of the Inside Passage, Skagway was the rollicking frontier town through which gold seekers passed on their arduous way up the 33mi Chilkoot Trail to the Yukon goldfields in 1897-98. To prevent perishing in the wilderness, prospectors were required to carry one ton of supplies over the pass, which meant 40 back-breaking ascents.
