A gardener's delight and inspirastion, Manito Park presents four lovingly cultivated landscapes from diverse horticultural traditions-a fine Japanese garden, an immense rose garden, a perennial garden and a large classical garden planted in the European Renaissance style. In addition to these, the park offers a small, glassed-in conservatory jammed with flowering plants, a lilac garden, play areas and a duck pond. Start at the centrally located Gaiser Conservatory (off 21st Ave. and Park Dr.), two interconnected greenhouses that display tropical, subtropical and temperate plant specimens from around the world. The conservatory overlooks Duncan Garden. Designed and built in 1913 and expanded in 1996, this three-acre garden incorporates a large central fountain and geometric planting beds. On the opposite side of the conservatory, the colorful Joel E. Ferris Perennial Garden gracefully drapes a gentle slope. A short stroll northwest of the conservatory leads to Rose Hill, a colorful and fragrant landscape graced with formal beds of 1,500 rose bushes in more than 150 varieties. West of Rose Hill, a high wooden fence encloses Nishinomiya Japanese Garden built in 1974 to coincide with Expo '74 and named in honor of Spokane's Japanese sister city. It centers around a large, sinuous pond stocked with fish and fed by a tumbling waterfall.
