In Italy, cooking is a family affair. And so it is at Insalata's, the charming Sausalito hangout named for Chef/owner Heidi Krahling's late father, Italo Insalata. Today, Krahling pays homage to her beloved babbo by mixing tender loving care with Mediterranean fare and local, seasonal ingredients. Insalata's dining room is spacious and perpetually packed yet somehow remains snug with wood furnishings and art that depicts nature's bounty. Expect Middle Eastern specialties and meze plates of eggplant fries with tzatziki, crispy spanakopita, and duck confit cigars; or heartier fare like a roasted honey- and pomegranate-glazed duck breast with couscous and Moroccan tomato jam. In the spotlight every Tuesday to Thursday night is a prix-fixe for under $30.
