Set in a trendy shopping area of downtown Los Gatos yet discreetly shielded from prying eyes with its opaque shades, Manresa seems all the more an old friend. Inside, what once felt rustic is now contemporary with its curvy fireplace, elegant chandeliers, mosaic tiles, and couch-filled lounge. An expansion in the back includes soft lighting set above luxurious pillowed banquettes. Servers are sharp and synchronized yet upbeat, never stuffy, and always capable of handling the bustling dining room. Chef David Kinch helms a kitchen that seems to run best on all cylinders serving two prix-fixe options: one is extensive; while the other "Chef's Spontaneous Menu" is even more detailed but lists only ingredients. Both are rooted in small portions of product-driven cuisine, bring tasty dashes of esoterica, and often impart a deep love for Japanese tastes and subtlety. Picture small, seared Nantucket bay scallops and multi-colored marble potato confit with yarrow butter and an exotic mélange of herbs, mustard flowers, and mizuna garnish. Finales here unveil such grand compositions as pine nut pudding, candy-cap mushroom ice cream, maple gelatin, and crispy beignets set in white chocolate sauce.

      They aim high here. Formal service. Incredible creative cuisine. Modern and very dimly lit dining area. Good tempo, maybe a little on the slow side however.

      Pros

      We did not even know it was a two star and when we finished we wanted to write to Michelin as we thought it really deserves a very high qualification: The service was simply perfect. The four courses which we only had three was perfect: imaginative, perfectly presented, wonderfully coordinated. The ambience, the way the staff did their job, not only with us,as we were looking at other tables, was difficult to improve. We visited the kitchen and greeted the chef and owner. Frankly speaking one of the very best restaurants we have been to and we have been to plenty of them.
