Located on the second floor of the renovated Hall of Records, this contemporary museum highlights the history of the Miwok people as well as lumbering, mining and agriculture in Calaveras County. Particularly worth noting is an excellent exhibit of the area's geologic history. A short stroll through the pleasant walled garden behind the building leads to a row of jail cells, where "Black Bart" was incarcerated during his trial. The historic courthouse where the robber was tried is also part of the complex.
