The Pikes Peak Cog Railway remains a great excursion. Small black coal-fired steam locomotives, tilted to keep the boilers level, originally pushed trains up the mountain's eastern side. Now diesel-electric models do so (late Apr-early Nov; round-trip 3hrs includes 30min at summit). From its picturesque depot, the train climbs more than 6,500ft in a series of steep grades with constantly changing views. Marmots and bighorn sheep cavort among the rocks.
