Part fully functioning film and television studio, part live-entertainment complex and amusement park, 420-acre Universal Studios Hollywood sprawls across and down a hillside overlooking the San Fernando Valley, 3mi northwest of Hollywood Boulevard. It is among the largest man-made tourist attractions in the US, annually welcoming 5 million visitors. Live-performance stages arrayed throughout the upper section of the park present regularly scheduled live shows, some inspired by popular films and television programs. Situated in and around Universal's actual sound stages and backlot, the Studio Center offers a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at the art and illusion of filmmaking as well as several film-related rides. Visitors board trams at the Entertainment Center for a bit of history and a bit of thrill, along with up-close glimpses of a working movie studio. Trams wind through sets portraying the Wild West, small-town and suburban America, New York City, Mexico, Europe and other locales. Adjoining the park are the Universal Amphitheatre, a live concert venue; the Universal Cineplex Odeon, an 18-screen movie theater; and several large restaurants. The Universal CityWalk, a whimsical shopping, dining and entertainment complex designed to appear as a compressed version of Los Angeles, is extremely popular with both Angelenos and out-of-towners who stroll its streets and dine in its many cafes and delis.
