With its elegant colonial villas dotted amid a rolling landscape of pine forests, Dalat has been a favourite place of escape for residents of Saigon since the French period. An attractive hill station full of contrasts, the town is quaintly kitsch and popular with a few artists. Although surrounded by traditional villages, it is also a modern university centre with a department dedicated to medical research.
