With its perpendicular streets, the old French Quarter to the south of Hoan Kiem lake is so different from the busy narrow streets of the Old Quarter that you could easily believe you were in another city. The streets here are lined with Belle Époque buildings and colonial houses now occupied by the city authorities, museums and art galleries. This district is also home to an opera house, a cathedral with huge square towers, and an attractive market (19 December market).
