Explore the impressive Cu Chi Tunnel system that the Vietcong used to hideout underground. Then, follow your guide to visit some of Ho Chi Minh City's most popular sights.
Begin your day at Cu Chi Tunnel. In response to the technological superiority of its attacker, the Vietcong moved underground. With trap doors, booby traps, and secret entrances, they were able to thwart the enemy. By war's end, over 300 miles (483 km) of many-storied tunnels had been dug by hand. At Cu Chi Tunnel, experience the lifestyle of the thousands who lived underneath the ground during wartime. The tunnels were replete with housing, conference rooms, schools, and even small theaters. For the adventurous, crawl through these renovated, lighted tunnels to glimpse life underground.
Your next stop is Reunification Hall. This building housed the executive offices and residence of former President Ngo Dinh Diem, the U.S.-supported leader of Vietnam in the 1960s. In April 1975, the gates were overrun by North Vietnamese tanks and their flag hung on the balcony. Notice that the very same tanks have been installed permanently on the front lawn.
Learn more about the conflict at the War Crime Museum. This museum tells the story of war from the Vietnamese perspective. Exhibits include photographs, machinery, and weapons that depict the harsh realities of war.
End your day at bustling Ben Thanh market. Established in 1914, this is the oldest market in the city, offering thousands of local and imported products. One of the city's most famous landmarks, everything common to the daily lives of people in Ho Chi Minh can be found here. In the wet market, there is fish, seafood, and flowers. Surrounding the market, find inexpensive eateries to sample the local fare.
