Admire the extravagance of the Cao Dai temple, home to Vietnam's third-largest religion. Then, travel to Cu Chi to learn about and explore its extensive underground wartime dwellings and tunnels.
Begin your day wandering through the ornate Cao Dai Temple. Watch from the balcony above as priests dressed in colorful robes chant and pray during one of the four daily services. The architecture of the temple is a combination of cathedral and pagoda, with pink dragon-wrapped columns, intricately wrought windows, and a cloud-painted ceiling. The Great Temple is as eclectic and colorful as the religion. Cao Daism, created in the late 1920s, is a mixture of Buddhism, Christianity, Taoism, and Confucianism. Those who follow this religion believe that by taking the best elements of multiple religions, one is able to create the ultimate religion.
After the Great Temple, travel on to the Cu Chi Tunnels. In response to the technological superiority of its attacker, the Vietcong moved underground. With trap doors, booby traps, and secret entrances, they were able to thwart the enemy. By war's end, over 300 miles (483 km) of many-storied tunnels had been dug by hand. At Cu Chi Tunnel, experience the lifestyle of the thousands who lived underneath the ground during wartime. The tunnels were replete with housing, conference rooms, schools, and even small theaters. For the adventurous, crawl through these renovated, lighted tunnels to glimpse life underground.
